Additional Information about the Curriculum

Swimming

Year 5 children have a weekly swimming lesson at Darwen Leisure Centre.  A coach is provided to transport the children to the pool. Class teachers work with specialist swimming teachers, to ensure that children are in groups which suit their swimming ability.

Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE)

Personal, Social and Health Education is an integral part of our teaching programme and covers issues such as working together, keeping to rules, respecting each other etc. All classes touch on aspects of this curriculum area in circle time and the different themes studied.

Sex and Relationships Education (SRE)

SRE is taught as part of the PSHE programme. The actual content of the lessons is agreed upon with the health services, using materials recommended by their professionals. Parents are notified before the lessons on sex education take place and given the opportunity to meet and view resources to be used as well as the content of the lessons. Parents have the right to withdraw their child from these lessons if they so wish. A copy of our Sex and Relationships policy is available on request.

Religious Education and Collective Worship

In addition to the subjects taught as required by the National Curriculum, Religious Education (RE) is taught in school in accordance with Blackburn with Darwen's agreed syllabus.

This teaching has a strong moral and spiritual underpinning and is broadly Christian in nature, but other religions and cultures are also included.

If any parents feel strongly that they do not wish their child to receive religious education or participate in the daily acts of worship, they must inform the Headteacher in writing. Alternative arrangements will be made to supervise your child during this time.

The children meet in assembly groups on Monday, Tuesday and Friday and in key stage groups on other days. Friday's assembly is a celebration of achievement and includes the award of dojo of the week certificates (this is sometimes done remotely, via Teams). The school has a special prayer which is said at the end of assemblies.
